Before you begin
- Python 3.12 or newer
Set up your example
- Save the complete code as xml-extract-text.py in a working folder.
- Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.
Sample files in this download:
- types.json
- sample.json
- people.json
- other.json
- sample.jsonl
- flat.json
- sample.xml
Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is xml-extract-text.py.
Run the script
python "xml-extract-text.py" --input "sample.xml" --xpath ".//title" --output "titles.json"If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.
What to expect
Collect complete text from elements matched by an XML path. The fixture returns Small Tools and Useful Code.

How it works
- Local UTF-8 input is limited to 10 MiB and held in memory.
- ElementTree supports a subset of XPath; itertext includes text from nested descendants.
- The fixture returns Small Tools and Useful Code.
Make it your own
--xpath
Use --xpath .//pages for page-count strings.
Adapt the processing
Edit main's list expression to include element attributes with text.
Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.
If something goes wrong
A namespace-qualified element is not found.
Use expanded tags such as .//{urn:books}title.
The destination already exists.
Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
