Export XML attributes for selected elements

Export attribute dictionaries from matched elements in document order.

Before you begin

  • Python 3.12 or newer
What this script changesCreates a new result and refuses overwrite; input is unchanged. DTD/entity declarations are rejected. XML serialization may change whitespace and prefixes and omits comments.

Set up your example

  1. Save the complete code as xml-export-attributes.py in a working folder.
  2. Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.

Sample files in this download:

  • types.json
  • sample.json
  • people.json
  • other.json
  • sample.jsonl
  • flat.json
  • sample.xml

Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is xml-export-attributes.py.

Run the script

Run command
python "xml-export-attributes.py" --input "sample.xml" --xpath ".//book" --output "attributes.json"

If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.

What to expect

Export attribute dictionaries from matched elements in document order. The sample reports ids b1 and b2.

How it works

  1. Local UTF-8 input is limited to 10 MiB and held in memory.
  2. Numbered matches are separate from any ID attribute and empty attribute dictionaries remain explicit.
  3. The sample reports ids b1 and b2.

Make it your own

--xpath

Use --xpath .//* to inspect every descendant's attributes.

Adapt the processing

Edit main's attributes mapping to retain only a chosen attribute.

Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.

If something goes wrong

An attributes object is empty.

The matched element has no attributes; narrow the path when appropriate.

The destination already exists.

Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
