Before you begin
- Python 3.12 or newer
Set up your example
- Save the complete code as xml-count-elements.py in a working folder.
- Save the provided sample files in that same folder; run commands from that folder.
Sample files in this download:
- types.json
- sample.json
- people.json
- other.json
- sample.jsonl
- flat.json
- sample.xml
Download the ZIP, extract it, and open a terminal inside the extracted folder. The source file is xml-count-elements.py.
Run the script
python "xml-count-elements.py" --input "sample.xml" --output "elements.json"If your system uses python3 instead of python, use that command for Python examples. Keep paths containing spaces in quotes. Required inputs and optional settings are described in the code and setup steps.
What to expect
Count every XML element by its expanded namespace name. catalog occurs once; book, title, pages occur twice each.

How it works
- Local UTF-8 input is limited to 10 MiB and held in memory.
- Namespace URIs remain part of tags so identically named elements from different vocabularies stay distinct.
- catalog occurs once; book, title, pages occur twice each.
Make it your own
--input
Point --input at another export to inspect its element vocabulary.
Adapt the processing
Edit main's counted expression to separate namespace and local name.
Change one setting at a time, run it again on sample data, and compare the output. The customization guide walks through this process.
If something goes wrong
Tag names include braces and URIs.
These are expanded namespace names, not errors.
The destination already exists.
Choose a new --output path. The script deliberately refuses to replace an existing result.
